Your radar for the new standardThe finalized way of working after rollout — documented, trained, and physically reinforced, so the improvement becomes routine. Click term for full definition. The Control Chart shows at a glance whether the process is stable, and tells you exactly when to act, and when to leave it alone. Watch the short video, then work with the toolkit PDF: it explains the method, shows a worked example and gives you a blank template to fill in.

Control Chart (SPC) in short

  1. Pick the metric. A critical X or Y from your Control PlanA living document defining what's controlled, how it's measured, its boundaries, and the reaction plan if it goes out of control. Click term for full definition, measured the same way every time.
  2. Choose the chart. Individuals (I-MR) for single values, p-chart for proportions, X̄-R for subgroups.
  3. Calculate the limits. From at least 20 points after the improvement: mean ± 3 standard deviations.
  4. Plot and post it. At the GembaJapanese for "the actual place"; going to directly observe a process rather than relying on documents or memory. Click term for full definition, at the point of use, updated on a fixed rhythm.
  5. Apply the rules. A point outside, or 7 in a row on one side or steadily rising: trigger the OCAP.

Key points

  • Limits come from the data.
  • Random inside: leave it alone.
  • Outside or pattern: act.
  • Post it where the work happens.
